Romania este plină de legende. În orașul liniștit Curtea de Argeș se află una dintre cele mai faimoase mănăstiri din țară. Ea a fost construită în timpul domnului Țării Românești, Neagoe Basarab, în 1517. Legenda Meșterului Manole cunoaște peste 200 de variante și a circulat în diverse forme până să fie consacrată ca baladă de către cunoscutul autor, Vasile Alecsandri. Balada a fost publicată pentru prima dată în 1852.
Povestea rămâne aceeași în toate variantele. Domnul țării l-a adus pe Manole și pe alți nouă meșteri de seamă la locul de construcție a mănăstirii pentru a clădi un lăcaș sfânt fără egal. Cu toate eforturile lor, construcția se prăbușea în fiecare noapte. Munca lor nu părea să aibă sfârșit. După consultarea unui oracol, ei au aflat că pentru ca biserica să reziste avea nevoie de un suflet omenesc. Pentru aceasta, trebuia să zideasca în perete prima persoană care se apropia de biserica, a doua zi la răsărit.
Cu toate că au căzut de acord că această metodă era crudă, au hotărât să o pună în aplicare având în vedere mânia domnului țării. Inima lui Manole a înghețat când a observat că prima persoană care a apărut în fața bisericii în ziua următoare, odată cu primele raze ale soarelui, era sotia lui insărcinată. Ea a vrut să-i facă o surpriză aducându-i micul dejun. Manole a fost nevoit să-și sacrifice soția, nimeni nefiind capabil să o salveze de o moarte atât de crudă. Femeia a acceptat zidirea și nu a protestat. Astfel, zidarii au reușit să construiască o mănăstire frumoasă. Dar legenda nu se termină aici.
Când biserica a fost terminată, domnul țării a dat ordin ca Manole și meșterii lui să fie închiși într-unul din turnurile mănăstirii. El a fost atât de mulțumit de munca lor încât dorea ca ei să nu mai poată construi o altă mănăstire mai frumoasă. Manole și-a construit o pereche de aripi din șindrilă și a încercat să scape sărind din turnul în care a fost condamnat să moară. A reușit să zboare câțiva metri, dar apoi s-a prăbușit și a murit. Se spune că în locul unde el a murit a apărut un izvor. Cei care vizitează mănăstirea pot vedea locul unde se spune că a fost zidită soția meșterului Manole și apa care a izvorât din locul în care meșterul și-a găsit sfârșitul.

Romania is full of legends. One of the most famous monasteries in the country is located in the quiet town of Curtea de Argeș. It was built during the time of the lord of Wallachia, Neagoe Basarab, in 1517. The legend of Master Manole has over 200 variants and circulated in various forms until it was consecrated as a ballad by the well-known author, Vasile Alecsandri. The ballad was first published in 1852.
The story remains the same in all variants. The lord of the land brought Manole and nine other prominent craftsmen to the monastery construction site to build a holy place without equal. Despite their best efforts, the construction collapsed every night. Their work seemed never-ending. After consulting an oracle, they learned that for the church to endure it needed a human soul. For this, they had to build in the wall the first person who approaches the church, the next day at sunrise.
Although they agreed that this method was cruel, they decided to carry it out in view of the anger of the lord of the land. Manole’s heart froze when he noticed that the first person who appeared in front of the church the next day, with the first rays of the sun, was his pregnant wife. She wanted to surprise him by bringing him breakfast. Manole had to sacrifice his wife, no one being able to save her from such a cruel death. The woman accepted to be built into the construction and did not protest. Thus, the masons managed to build a beautiful monastery. But the legend doesn’t end there.
When the church was finished, the lord of the country ordered that Manole and his craftsmen be imprisoned in one of the towers of the monastery. He was so pleased with their work that he wished they could never build another more beautiful monastery. Manole built himself a pair of wings out of shingles and tried to escape by jumping from the tower where he was condemned to die. He managed to fly a few meters, but then crashed and died. It is said that a spring appeared in the place where he died. Those who visit the monastery can see the place where the craftsman’s wife Manole is said to have been built in and the water that sprang from the place where the craftsman met his end.
