„Big Red” este un roman care spune povestea unui tânăr pe nume Danny și a remarcabilului său setter irlandez, Big Red. Amplasată în sălbăticia pădurilor canadiene, povestea urmărește aventurile acestui duo inseparabil în timp ce se confruntă cu provocările sălbăticiei.
Danny locuiește cu tatăl său într-o cabană de la marginea moșiei domnului Haggin. Danny întâlnește și un condamnat evadat care se ascunde în pădure. Danny se apără și îl rănește pe bărbat, ținându-l legat până sosesc autoritățile. Domnul Haggin realizează cât de puternică este legătura dintre băiat și câine și îl dă pe Red lui Danny.
„Big Red” este o poveste inspiratoare despre prietenie, supraviețuire și frumusețea sălbăticiei. Aceasta surprinde esența de a trăi în aer liber și legătura de neîntrerupt care se poate dezvolta între un băiat și tovarășul său canin loial.

“Big Red” is a novel that tells the story of a young man named Danny and his remarkable Irish Setter, Big Red. Set in the wilds of the Canadian forests, the story follows the adventures of this inseparable duo as they face the challenges of the wilderness.
Danny lives with his father in a cabin on the edge of Mr. Haggin’s estate. Danny and his father are skilled woodsmen and earn their living off the land by hunting, fishing, gathering and selling wild honey, trapping animals and selling their skins, and sometimes doing odd jobs for Mr. Haggin.
One day, Danny goes looking for a bull that has gone missing from Mr. Haggin’s herd. Danny finds the bull, only to find it killed by a powerful black bear that has been terrorizing the area for years. Coming to Mr. Haggin’s to tell him about his bull, Danny meets Red for the first time. Red is Mr. Haggin’s dog: an Irish Setter.
Although Danny grew up with dogs, he had never seen one like Red. He is impressed by his beauty as well as how smart and strong he is.
Danny and Red form a deep and unbreakable bond as they navigate rugged terrain, encounter wild animals, and learn to trust and rely on each other. Red, an amazing and intelligent hunting dog, proves to be one of the best bird-catching dogs in the region, making him valuable to Danny’s animal-catching activities.
Danny and Red have many adventures in the wild that test their courage and strengthen their bond of love and loyalty. One day, Danny takes Red with him while he checks the traps, and they fight a wolverine*. On a deer hunt, Danny shoots a buck but gets injured and Red stays by his side all night. Unbeknownst to Danny, Red’s growl protects Danny from a wildcat that was stalking them. Danny also encounters an escaped convict hiding in the woods. Danny fights back and injures the man, keeping him tied up until the authorities arrive. Mr. Haggin realizes how strong the bond between boy and dog is and gives Red to Danny.
