A fost odată o babă și un moșneag, fiecare cu câte o fată: fata babei și fata moșneagului. Fata babei era leneșă, obraznică și rea la suflet, dar, fiind fata mamei, era răsfățată și lăsa greul pe seama fetei moșneagului. Aceasta din urmă era frumoasă, harnică, ascultătoare și bună la inimă, însă trebuia să suporte relele surorii și ale mamei vitrege.
Fata moșneagului se ocupa de treburile gospodărești, iar fata babei lenevea și se ocupa doar de plăcerile ei. Baba și fiica ei erau mereu nemulțumite de fata moșneagului, iar relația dintre ele era tensionată. La șezători, fata moșneagului lucra cu dârzenie, în timp ce fata babei numai se prefăcea că muncește.
Deși fata moșneagului era harnică și bună la suflet, mama vitregă și sora ei o criticau mereu. Într-o zi, moșneagul, supărat de vorbele babei, îi spune fetei să plece și să-și găsească alt loc unde să trăiască. Fata, fără să-și piardă demnitatea, pornește în lume, hotărâtă să-și găsească destinul.
Pe drum, întâlnește diferite lucruri care-i cer ajutorul, cum ar fi o cățelușă bolnavă, un păr cu omizi, o fântână și un cuptor nelipit. Fata îi ajută pe toți, iar aceștia îi oferă în schimb daruri: o salbă de galbeni, pahare de argint, pere coapte și multe altele. Ajungând la o casă misterioasă, fata este întâmpinată de Sfânta Duminică, care o învață ce să facă cu lucrurile primite.
Reîntorcându-se acasă cu darurile primite, fata moșneagului aduce prosperitate și fericire în viața ei și a tatălui ei.
Astfel, povestea subliniază importanța bunătății, hărniciei și faptelor bune în fața obstacolelor vieții, ilustrând că ceea ce dăruiești se întoarce în cele din urmă către tine.

Once upon a time there was an old woman and an old man, each with a daughter: the old woman’s daughter and the old man’s daughter. The old woman’s daughter was lazy, naughty and mean at heart, but being mother’s daughter, she was spoiled and left the burden to the old man’s daughter. The latter was beautiful, hardworking, obedient and kind-hearted, but she had to endure the evils of her sister and stepmother.
The old man’s daughter took care of the household chores, and the old mother’s daughter was lazy and occupied only with her pleasures. The old woman and her daughter were always unhappy with the old man’s daughter, and the relationship between them was strained. In the village, the old man’s girl worked hard, while the old woman’s girl only pretended to work.
Although the old man’s daughter was hardworking and kind-hearted, her stepmother and sister always criticized her. One day, the old man, angry at the old woman’s words, tells the girl to leave and find another place to live. The girl, without losing her dignity, goes out into the world, determined to find her destiny.
Along the way, she encounters various things that ask for her help, such as a sick puppy, a pear tree with caterpillars, a well, and a broken oven. The girl helps everyone, and they give her gifts in return: a bag with gold coins, silver glasses, ripe pears and more. Arriving at a mysterious house, the girl is greeted by Saint Sunday, who teaches her how to do good deeds.
Returning home with the gifts received, the old man’s daughter brings prosperity and happiness into her and her father’s life.
Thus, the story emphasizes the importance of kindness, diligence and good deeds in the face of life’s obstacles, illustrating that what you give out eventually comes back to you.
