A fost odată ca niciodată un țăran sărac care avea trei fii. Erau săraci lipiți pământului și abia își duceau traiul de azi pe mâine. Așa că, într-o bună zi, cei trei băieți s-au hotarât să învețe o meserie și au plecat în lume să-și încerce norocul.
Cel mai mare dintre băieți a întâlnit un om ințelept, care l-a învățat tainele cărților. A fost foarte silitor și în scurtă vreme a reușit să deprindă toată învățătura de la dascălul său. După un an, a venit vremea să plece acasă iar baiatul a primit în dar un măgăruș fermecat. De îndată ce măgărușului i se spunea cuvântul magic, din gura lui curgeau bani de aur.
Băiatul mijlociu a învățat meseria de croitor. Și el era foarte harnic si îndemânatic. Meșterul a fost foarte mulțumit de el și după ce l-a învățat să croiască și să coasă, îi dărui o masă fermecată. Îndată ce băiatul rostea cuvântul magic, masa se umplea de tot felul de bunătăți. Din senin apăreau tot felul de mâncăruri și băuturi nemaivăzute până atunci.
Cei doi frați erau acum tare fericiți că visul lor de a putea duce un trai lipsit de orice griji se împlinise. După ce și-au terminat treburile, plini de nerăbdare să îi arate și tatălui lor minunățiile pe care le-au câștigat, au pornit spre casă. In drumul de intoarcere, au înoptat la un han unde au căzut pradă hangiului lacom după bogăția lor. El a legat frații la mâini și la picioare, i-a aruncat în pivniță și le-a furat măgărușul și masa fermecată.
Între timp, cel mai mic dintre frați a învățat meseria de tâmplar. Meșterul lui era un om tare aspru și-i dădea foarte multe lucruri de făcut, dar cum era harnic și isteț, a devenit un ucenic bun. Când a învățat meseria și a fost pregătit să se întoarcă acasă, meșterul i-a dat o nuielușă fermecată. Când se rostea cuvântul magic, nuielușa bătea fără milă pe oamenii răi și necinstiti care erau în preajmă. Ajungând la același han, a descoperit nenorocirea fraților săi. Acesta a intrat în han, rostind cuvântul magic și nuielușa a bătut hangiul până când acesta și-a mărturisit fapta necinstită și a dat drumul fraților, înapoindu-le măgărușul și masa fermecată.
După toate cele întâmplate, frații și-au continuat drumul, ajungând la casa părintească. Aici au fost întâmpinați cu mare bucurie de tot satul. Frații au pus masa fermecată afară și nu a fost om care să nu se sature sau nevoiaș care să plece fără bani de la măgărușul fermecat.
Sătenii le-au mulțumit fraților pentru bunătatea si mărinimia lor, pentru că au muncit cinstit ca să primească darurile fermecate, aducându-le bucurie celor din jur.

Once upon a time there was a poor man who had three sons. They were very poor, barely making ends meet. So one fine day the three boys decided to learn a trade and went out into the world to try their luck.
The eldest of the boys met a wise man who taught him the secrets of books. He was very diligent and in a short time he managed to learn all he could from his teacher. After a year, it was time to go home and the boy received a charmed donkey as a gift. As soon as the donkey was told the magic word, gold coins flowed from his mouth.
The middle boy learned the tailor’s trade. And he was very hardworking and skillful. The tailor was very pleased with him and after teaching him to cut and sew, gave him an enchanted table. As soon as the boy said the magic word, the table was filled with all kinds of goodies. All kinds of foods and drinks never seen before appeared out of nowhere.
The two brothers were now very happy that their dream of being able to lead a carefree life had come true. After finishing their chores, eager to show their father the wonders they had earned, they set off for home. On the way back, they spent the night at an inn where they fell prey to the greedy innkeeper who was after their enchanted gifts. He tied the brothers’ hand and feet, threw them into the cellar and stole their donkey and the enchanted table.
Meanwhile, the youngest of the brothers learned the carpenter’s trade. His master was a very harsh man and gave him a lot to do, but as he was industrious and clever, he became a good apprentice. When he learned the trade and was ready to return home, the craftsman gave him an enchanted club. When the magic word was spoken, the club mercilessly beat the wicked and dishonest people who were around it. Arriving at the same inn, he discovered the misfortune of his brothers. He entered the inn, uttering the magic word, and the club beat the innkeeper until he confessed his dishonest act and let the brothers go, returning the donkey and the enchanted table.
After all that happened, the brothers continued on their way, reaching their parents’ house. Here they were greeted with great joy by the whole village. The brothers set the enchanted table outside, and there was not a man who did not get enough food or a needy man who left penniless thanks to the enchanted donkey.
The villagers thanked the brothers for their kindness and generosity, because they worked honestly to receive the enchanted gifts, bringing joy to those around them.
